Film Details Attacks on Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Assaulted: Civil Rights Under FireWe first caught wind of Assaulted:  Civil Rights Under Fire in 2012 when the original Kickstarter campaign was making its rounds.  Wildly popular amongst crowd-funders, through the original campaign and the “finishing” campaign, director Kris Koenig raised $148,737 from nearly 2,000 contributions – well over the $135K goal.

Koenig describes the goal of Assaulted as “educating the public about how their rights are under attack.”  A noble goal, given the never-ending attack on the supposedly constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms.  The film touches on a number of historical events ranging from the 1946 Battle of Athens (TN) to the LA riots of the early ’90s and gun confiscations after hurricane Katrina.  Narrated by rapper Ice-T, Assaulted features appearances by Ted Nugent, Chris Cheng, Alan Gottlieb, Alan Gura and others – all rock stars in their own right.

Dead Patriot Films says of gun rights and gun control:

With the original intention of empowering a citizenry’s ability to defend themselves against a corrupt or tyrannical government, the concept today may seem farfetched or the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster. However, it has happened throughout U.S. history. And long before gun control was positioned as a “common sense measure” to combat violence, it was used as a means to oppress certain minority groups. Presently, the growing trend in gun control favors the wealthy and privileged, who leverage their connections to ensure their Second Amendment rights and safety, while those of lesser means struggle.

Having to compete with larger movie houses for the attention of viewers, Koenig pointed out the lack of awareness about the film, even amongst gun rights proponents.  Assaulted enjoyed limited theatrical showings in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington in June 2013 before being released on DVD in October.  Current distribution channels consist mainly of DVD sales and video streaming services.

Going into it, I was worried that Assaulted might be the preaching-to-the-choir, Rah Rah, gun-rights-down-your-throat type of documentary that only already gung-ho Second Amendment supporters would bother seeking out and tolerate sitting through.  Given the important nature of the attacks on the right to keep and bear arms, it would be tragic if that were the case.  Thankfully, this is not so.  The speakers in the film are articulate and easy to watch, the news footage is relatable, the history is interesting and not dry at all.  At no point did I find myself bored, as I often do during documentaries – even those on topics in which I am interested.  This makes Assaulted ideal for sharing with firends and family; especially those who might not necessarily be on board with the fight to maintain the rights spelled out and protected by the US Constitution.

Koenig and Cheng were in the Second Amendment Foundation’s both at SHOT Show 2014 to help raise awareness of the film for viewers as well as to find retailers interested in distribution.
