Anti-Gun Group Encourages Misuse of 911 System, Police Resources

csgv911The unsurprising revelation that their members are obsessed with penises and penis size isn’t the only thing to be gleaned from the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence’s (CSGV) Facebook page.  The zealous gun control group is also apparently using social media to encourage the misuse of the 911 system to further their political goals.

The CSGV – formerly known as National Coalition to Ban Handguns (NCBH) – posted the following to their Facebook page:  “If you see someone carrying a gun in public and have ANY doubts as to their intentions, call 911. Never put your safety–or the safety of your children and loved ones–at the mercy of weak gun laws that allow individuals to buy and carry guns with little, if any, screening for criminal and/or mental health background.

Several of their Facebook fans, seemingly struggling to suppress small flashes of independent thought, are assisted by the CSGV in follow-up comments.

One hoplophobic poster, apparently concerned about using up all of their cell phone minutes, says that “the problem with that is that whenever I see someone carrying a gun in public I have doubts about their intentions and my safety.”  The gun-ban advocacy group encourages them:  “Then call 911. That’s the point.

Another poster seems to get slightly further in the thought process, nearly glomming on to some genuine common sense.  “Has anyone here actually called 911 to report someone with a gun? I have and was told that there is nothing illegal about having a gun and that was the end of the conversation,” she posts.  Having no apparent interest in something so petty as the rule of law, CSGV replies that this is an “unacceptable response” and urges the poster to “work up the chain on your next call.”

Someone else almost gets it as well:  “Police can do absolutely nothing until after a crime has been committed […] they have the right to do so and police have no rights to impede them until after a crime has occurred.”  The gun control lobbying organization continues force-feeding their nonsense and encourages CSGV followers to divert police personnel from doing actual police work to respond to a location where they know that no crime has been committed, saying “just by responding to the scene and monitoring these individuals, police make the situation safer for everyone.”

An apparently frustrated posters complains that “911 doesn’t care. They’ll just tell you there is nothing illegal about it.”  CSGV’s only response is typical of such zealous groups as Handgun Control Inc., Moms Demand Action, and their ilk:  relentlessly hassle them until you find someone who might cave.  “Then call again, or work up the chain,” they reply – as if the next person they talk to will be following a different set of rules.

The gun ban group repeatedly makes mention of “it varies by state law” when replying to various posters about what is and is not illegal.  There is little, if any, mention of the fact that intentional abuse or misuse of the 911 system (which includes prank and non-emergency calls) is nearly universally illegal.  SUNY Albany’s Center for Problem Oriented Policing reports that the problem of 911 misuse and abuse is rampant, citing examples of places like San Diego, where over half of 911 calls are frivolous, and Louisville, whose rate for non-emergency 911 calls is 40%.

Not only is this type of “activism” reckless and irresponsible, it is downright dangerous to encourage people to pull police resources away from responding to situations which legitimately call for those resources.  To make matters worse, these are the same type of people who complain ad nauseam about police response time when they need them.
