To Keep and Bear Arms – An Official Report For the Armed Forces and the American People

Second Amendment to the United States ConstitutionThese days, getting a positive message on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms from anyone at the federal government level is a difficult task.  It wasn’t always that way, though.

The Big Picture video below, presented by the US Army and featuring a second video produced by the National Rifle Association, preaches the virtues of focusing efforts on promoting safety training and emphasizing adherence to basic firearms safety rules.

The idea that gun control laws do not have an impact on law abiding citizens – as they would obey the law and criminals, by their very nature, would not – is not a new one.  The history of the fight to preserve our constitutionally protected individual right to keep and bear arms has not changed much over the years.

Nor is the idea that the concept of regulating an item because an individual misuses it is absurd.  As the video’s narrator says:  “To legislate firearms because they are occasionally misused is like outlawing automobiles for the same reason. It’s not this car, it’s this careless driver whose foot presses the pedal. That is the object of legislation which tells him not to speed.

The narrator goes on to say that “a program that emphasizes safety procedures rather than firearms control makes it possible for a growing number of sportsmen and women to enjoy the recreation and healthful benefits of good sports and good shooting.”  Developing rifle marksmanship skills through participation in shooting events such as the National Matches at Camp Perry is an endeavor that “helps develop healthy minds, self discipline, initiative and team spirit” – according to the government-endorsed video.

This is a far cry from the anti-gun banner carried by many at all levels of the anti-rights movement, including those involved in our government at the federal level.  Have a look at the video below and see the message on firearms that our government used to send. Continue reading

Reader Poll: Best Caliber for CCW?

Kimber TargetIt is a never ending debate – which caliber is best for a carry gun?  One caliber may penetrate while another might not.  One caliber allows for carrying more rounds while another may make a bigger hole.  One might be available off the shelf while another is difficult to find.

There is a lot of information out there such as FBI terminal ballistics tests and reports on handgun wounding factors and effectiveness that present empirical data on various rounds.  Perhaps you have done your own testing or know someone who has.  Maybe you just picked it because there were zombies on the box.

No matter how you picked it, we want to know which caliber you use for your carry gun.  Choose your answer below and feel free to expand on your answer in the comments section with what type of ammo you use in the caliber.

ATF Releases US Firearms Trace Data for 2013

BATFE LogoFollowing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recently released 2013 international firearms trace data, the ATF last week released aggregated firearms trace data for all US states and territories for calendar year 2013. Firearm traces provide critical investigative leads to law enforcement and can link a suspect to a firearm in a criminal investigation, identify potential traffickers, and detect local, interstate and international patterns in the sources and types of crime guns. Traces provide information on the movement of a crime gun from the manufacturer or importer through distributors and ultimately to the retail point of sale and purchaser.

The 2013 report includes a state-by-state breakdown of types and calibers of firearms recovered and traced, source states, criminal offenses associated with the crime guns, time-to-crime, and age ranges of crime gun possessors at the time of recovery. Key findings of this year’s report include pistols as the most common firearm type recovered and traced, 9 mm as the top caliber recovered and traced, and 11.08 years as the average time-to-crime for crime guns recovered and traced in the U.S. and its territories.
