GLOCK Recognizes National Safety Month with Important Firearms Safety Guidelines

Pistol manufacturer continues promoting confidence to live your life

Smyrna, Ga.  — In honor of National Safety Month, GLOCK, a leading global manufacturer of pistols and accessories, wants to remind gun owners of  10 important safety rules. These safety tips will help users remain confident and safe when using a firearm.

Rule 1: Train with all your guns.  Every gun is unique in the way it feels, handles and fires, so it’s important to achieve a maximum comfort level with every gun you own by practicing with each one separately at a local dealer or range. Done on a regular basis, this exercise will strengthen familiarity and muscle memory, so each gun feels as natural and comfortable as the next, even in stressful situations. While training on the range, remember to always use acceptable eye and ear protection.

Rule 2: Handle every firearm as if it’s loaded.

Rule 3: Always point the muzzle in a safe direction, away from yourself and others.  A safe direction means Continue reading

Latest Drop in U.S. Murder Rate Will Confound Critics of Self-Defense Laws

From NRA-ILA:

Giving a positive character to the old expression, “same old stuff,” this week the FBI preliminarily reported that violent crime has dropped yet again – for the 18th time in the last 20 years. According to the report, the estimated annual number of murders dropped 1.9 percent from 2010 to 2011 which, given the increase in the U.S. population during the year, would translate into a drop of between 2.5-3 percent in the per capita rate of murders.

The FBI is expected to report the final 2011 figures around the end of the summer. Assuming those figures match the current estimates, the nation’s murder rate has been cut by about 53 percent and the total violent crime rate has been cut by about 49 percent since 1991, when violent crime hit an all-time high. Stated another way, the nation’s murder rate has fallen to about a 48-year low, and the nation’s total violent crime rate has fallen to about a 41-year low. Continue reading

Gun “Buy Back” Programs Continue, Despite Being Ineffective

Plenty of politicians and anti-gunners love gun turn-ins, often incorrectly called “buy backs.”  (As one GunLink Forum user says, “How can you buy something you never owned ‘back’, using other people’s money?”)  Misnomer or otherwise, the facts point to these programs being largely ineffective wastes of money, often at the expense of taxpayers.

For example, a recent Chicago Tribune OpEd  states that six such events conducted over the past six years have yielded over 23,000 weapons turned in.  One highly touted event alone claimed to remove over 4,000 weapons from the streets, (despite nearly all of them not being “on the streets” in the first place and nearly 700 being fakes or replicas anyway).  For some, this makes little difference.  As New Haven, Connecticuit, Assistant Police Chief Tobin Hensgen says in regard to gun turn-in events: “Even an unusable gun can be used to scare or intimidate.”  Perhaps when the knife “buy back” events start up, we can make a little money with some rulers and silver spray paint.

Despite some of the strictest gun laws in the nation and the popular turn-in events, murders and Continue reading

Next Edition of Firearms Guide Packs Even More Info Than Before

Firearms Guide 3rd EditionAfter a few hiccups with the release date, the long-awaited 3rd Edition of the Firearms Guide is finally available.  I spoke with Chris from Impressum Media, creators of the Multimedia Firearms Guide, at the 2012 SHOT Show earlier this year where he told me of the coming updates.  During the show, Chris had anticipated the release within a few weeks, which turned into early March, which turned into late March and then early May.  The wait is over and users now have access to detailed information on ammunition and firearms from over 250 manufacturers spanning 38 countries totaling over 55,000 entries.  The creators tout the Firearms Guide 3rd Edition as “the most extensive firearms, ammo and air guns reference guide and schematics library.”

The Firearms Guide isn’t just a list of guns, either.  The entries include a great deal of detail including price, manufacturer info, barrel length, sight radius, caliber, features list and more.  This volume of information could easily overwhelm you if it were not so easy to navigate.  Entries can be searched for by name or  narrowed down by selecting from 14 different criteria – including caliber, country of origin, price, action and more. Firearms Industry Matches ATF Reward Ohio and Georgia Firearms Theft Cases

BATFE LogoThe National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms industry, has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the theft of firearms in two separate, presumably unrelated cases in Ohio and Georgia.

The first theft occurred on May 4 from NSSF member Vandalia Range and Armory in Vandalia, Ohio.  According to the BATFE, a total of 31 firearms were stolen from the armory during the burglary.

The second incident, occurring on May 30 from Oz Cutlery, a federal firearms licensee, in Newnan, Georgia involved the theft of 11 pistols and revolvers.

In both cases, the reward offer matches a $5,000 reward offer by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).  ATF and local law enforcement are investigating the theft and are seeking information from the public that would lead to the resolution of these investigations.

Steve Sanetti, president of the NSSF, said, “Our matching reward Continue reading
