National Shooting Sports Month Kicks Off with Reminder: “A Day at the Range is a Day of Fun”
National Shooting Sports Month in August provides the perfect opportunity for experienced target shooters and newcomers alike to head to a shooting range in your area and experience what millions of Americans have long appreciated — that a day at the range is a day of fun!
This 31-day celebration of the shooting sports, developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) in 2017, reminds people that everyone can enjoy these safe, fun and social activities. It’s also the perfect time for an experienced shooter to mentor a newcomer in a sport that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment at every skill level.
National Shooting Sports Month has been growing steadily since its inception three years ago. This year’s celebration includes more than 2,000 events at ranges and retailers across the country — a new record! — and all-new Gearbox Giveaway drawings for some stellar prize packs. Experienced shooters will also discover how they can give the shooting sports a boost when they mentor someone new as part of NSSF’s nationwide +ONESM Movement.
“When you take someone to the shooting range, whether a newcomer or an experienced shooter, youth or adult, you’re going to have a good time,” said Zach Snow, NSSF Director, Retail & Range Business Development. “Whether it’s breaking clay targets, knocking down steel plates or shooting long distance, the shooting sports are exciting, safe and social. A day at the range is a day making memories.”
The information hub for National Shooting Sports Month and its numerous Gearbox Giveaways is LetsGoShooting.org. There you can learn information about dozens of target-shooting sports involving rifle, shotgun and handgun either in a recreational or competitive format. You’ll also find the shooting ranges and firearms retailers near you, learn about National Shooting Sports Month events in your state, enter the Gearbox Giveaways, print targets, watch instructional videos and learn how to safely handle and store firearms.
For those taking the +ONE Pledge and mentoring someone new, our Range Safety and Etiquette video is a great way to kick off that first visit to a range for both. “Extend that invitation,” encouraged Snow. “You’ll be glad you did.”
Don’t have a mentor? No problem. Shooting ranges work with newcomers all the time and can help you get started with safe, supervised instruction.
Snow encourages the use of the hashtag #LetsGoShooting on social media, saying, “Sharing your experience reminds others of what they’re missing and encourages them to spend a day at the range,” said Snow. “It’s going to be a great month, and we want to know how everyone is celebrating.”
Project Childsafe Marks 20 Years as America’s Leading Firearm Safety Program
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) this year marks the 20th anniversary of its Project ChildSafe program, which has increased awareness of safe firearms handling and storage practices among millions of gun owners, helped reduce accidental firearms deaths to historic lows and become an indispensable firearms safety education resource for partners in every state and the U.S. territories.
“The No. 1 objective of Project ChildSafe has always been saving lives by urging gun owners to store their firearms responsibly when not in use, and giving them the tools to do it,” said NSSF CEO Steve Sanetti.
Those tools include educational materials and more than 38 million free gun locks that have been distributed by a network of thousands of partners from law enforcement, fish and wildlife agencies, conservation groups, firearms retailers, gun ranges, the faith community, tribal organizations, Boy Scouts of America chapters, 4-H and other groups nationwide.
Project ChildSafe has made a meaningful impact on safety nationwide. Annual reports from the National Safety Council show fatal firearms accidents are trending toward the lowest numbers since data collection began, and recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show fatal firearms accidents represent less than half of a percent of all accidental deaths in the U.S. Continue reading
I Want to Purchase a Firearm; How Does This Work?
How long does it take? How does the process work?
For seasoned firearm purchasers, the buying process can be an easy, familiar process but for new buyers the process might seem complicated or overwhelming. Fear not, the process is actually easy and straight forward.
Gun laws, of course, vary by state with a dozen and a half or so states requiring some form of waiting period and other states requiring special licenses or registration of firearms. However, one thing is universally true – when you buy a firearm from a licensed dealer, you must fill out some paperwork and, generally, go through a background check process (sometimes called a “Brady Check”).
One of the most frequent questions I hear from new purchasers at the gun counter, right up there with (and sometimes ahead of) cost and features, is how the process works and how long it takes.
Since most states (including ours) do not have additional waiting periods or extra licensing or registration, we will not address those things here and will, instead, focus on the standard nationwide process. Continue reading

Recalled Risers will not be returned. DO NOT use your .308/SR-25 10 Round Magazines unless it has been assembled with the new replacement riser! Any unintended discharge has the potential for causing injury or death.
HOW TO DETERMINE IF .308/SR-25 10 ROUND MAGAZINES NEEDS REPLACED:
Load your magazine with .308 cartridges of the until the magazine can no longer accept any additional cartridges. Remove each cartridge contained in the magazine and count the total number of cartridges that were capable of fitting within the magazine. If that number exceeds 10, the magazine is subject to this recall. Alternatively, if your .308/SR-25 10 ROUND MAGAZINES contains a black riser (depicted at left), then your magazine is subject to this recall.
REPLACING YOUR AFFECTED PRODUCT:
If you own a magazine that is subject to this recall, Sentry Products Group will provide a replacement magazine configured with the replacement riser (depicted at right) and ship it to you at no additional cost.
Contact HexMag immediately! They will ask for your Name, Address, Telephone Number, Number of Magazines, and provide to you an RMA # for return and tracking purposes. Once you have been provided an RMA #, you will need to remove the riser from your affected product, and send the affected riser to:SENTRY Products Group, LLC, 2929 S. Cole Road, Boise ID 83709. Please discard the remaining components of the affected magazine. Upon receipt, Sentry will return a new replacement magazine.

Cabela’s Outdoor Fund $50,000 Grant Will Provide Free Project Childsafe Gun Locks to State Agencies
Thanks to a generous $50,000 grant from the Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) will provide its Project ChildSafe gun locks and firearm safety education materials to state departments of natural resources to promote secure storage of firearms to students in hunter education classes and other venues.
This is the second grant provided by Cabela’s Outdoor Fund to the Project ChildSafe Foundation, the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports NSSF’s firearms safety efforts, most notably those of the Project ChildSafe program. “NSSF is extremely grateful for this Cabela’s Outdoor Fund grant that allows Project ChildSafe to continue providing gun locks and firearm safety education materials to state agencies,” said Bill Brassard, NSSF Senior Director, Communications, who oversees NSSF firearm safety initiatives. “Thanks to Project ChildSafe and other genuine firearm safety programs, fatal firearms accidents have declined to historic low levels.”
Project ChildSafe firearm safety kits include a gun lock and a firearms safety brochure that discusses safe handling and secure storage procedures, and how to keep guns from falling into the wrong hands.
Shipments of the firearm safety kits will begin later this year, with the kits accompanied by supporting materials such as NSSF’s Safe Storage Options infographic, a firearm safety DVD, and NSSF’s new suicide prevention brochure.

KelTec Announces Recall of Certain Sub-2000 Rifles
KelTec Firearms has announced a voluntary recall of certain Sub-2000 (aka Sub2k) pistol-caliber collapsible rifles due to a potentially dangerous condition. While, thankfully, we escaped our personal firearms being subject to this condition, many others are still out there.
Sub-2000 owners can check to see if their firearm is subject to the recall by entering their serial number(s) on the recall page or by viewing the list of all affected serial numbers.

IMPORTANT SUB-2000 SAFETY RECALL NOTICE
We have recently identified an issue with the heat treatment of certain steel tubes received from a third‐party supplier from which the barrels for a limited number of Kel‐Tec SUB‐2000 rifles were manufactured. This could potentially cause the barrel to rupture when a cartridge is fired and could result in serious personal injury. The safety of our customers is our primary concern, so Kel‐Tec has voluntarily initiated this recall because of the possibility of a barrel rupturing.
This recall only affects a portion of SUB‐2000s that were manufactured in 2017.
