Concealed Carry

Reader Poll: Best Caliber for CCW?

Kimber TargetIt is a never ending debate – which caliber is best for a carry gun?  One caliber may penetrate while another might not.  One caliber allows for carrying more rounds while another may make a bigger hole.  One might be available off the shelf while another is difficult to find.

There is a lot of information out there such as FBI terminal ballistics tests and reports on handgun wounding factors and effectiveness that present empirical data on various rounds.  Perhaps you have done your own testing or know someone who has.  Maybe you just picked it because there were zombies on the box.

No matter how you picked it, we want to know which caliber you use for your carry gun.  Choose your answer below and feel free to expand on your answer in the comments section with what type of ammo you use in the caliber.

Cam & Co Interview – Chris W. Cox: NRA “Unequivocally” Supports Open Carry

Chris Cox went on Cam & Co. for an interview to talk about open carry in the wake of heat that they are taking over a previous response to Texas demonstrations.  He also addresses the failure of gun control in California and discusses other Second Amendment issues of the day.

More No-Gun-Zone Backlash: Open Carry Events Going Too Far?

No Guns & Coffee.  Or Burritos.

No Guns AllowedIt is a story that we have seen play out before, most notably at Starbucks but also at numerous other businesses.  Like Starbucks, Chipotle has largely deferred to the law of the land when it came to carrying firearms in their restaurants – if not prohibited by law, the stores would generally not put a specific policy in place to ban the practice.  And, like Starbucks, some patrons took things a bit far.  Now, after a push from anti-gun zealots “Moms Demand Action,” Chipotle restaurants are asking customers to leave their guns at home… just like Starbucks.

It starts out ordinarily enough.  People who choose to carry a firearm simply have another business which they could patronize without having to change their carry habits or unnecessarily handle their firearms un-holstering and re-holstering just to grab lunch.  Once word spreads that the business is “firearms friendly” certain people start making a bigger deal out of it; purposefully drawing attention to their sidearms, taking selfies or pictures of each other with their firearms in the store.  Then come the celebrations – the Second Amendment rallies where a crowd of people with long guns slung across their shoulders, signs raised above their heads and then… #hashtags.  #LookIHaveAGunInThisRestaurant.

All of this is almost immediately followed by the predictable outcome:  the restaurant simply disallows firearms at their business.

And that is exactly what Chipotle did with a statement today: Continue reading

N82 Offers Range of Comfortable, Innovative Holsters

N82 Tactical HolstersA Review of N82 Tactical’s Ultra-Comfortable Holsters

If you haven’t heard any buzz about N82 Tactical (pronounced Nate Squared Tactical, after the company founders) and their holster lineup, it could be the case that you don’t spend a lot of time perusing firearm websites or publications because the buzz is certainly going around.

We first started checking out N82 Tactical holsters as our KelTec P11 project was wrapping up and we were looking for carry options.  We had heard about them through our friends over at the Tac Daddy Live show, but didn’t know much about them.  Obviously it was time to learn more, so we contacted Nate B. who, along with Nate J., is one of the company’s two namesake Nates.  N82 Tactical offers three styles of IWB holsters for a huge variety of handguns.  The general construction of each style is roughly the same for the backing/pad with the main differences being in the actual holster part and the belt clip attachment.  Shortly after talking to Nate, he had P11 holster in each of their three styles headed to GunLink HQ.

Construction

The secret to the comfort of N82 holsters is in the construction of the backing pad.  The backing of all N82 holsters consists of the same three layers.  The outside surface, the surface that comes into contact with your firearm, is oil tanned leather.  This provides a safe contact surface that won’t damage the finish of your firearm but is still durable.  The inside surface, the side against your body, is a layer of Continue reading

A CCW Permit Online? In Under an Hour?

Carry AcademyGet a carry permit online in under an hour?  Sound too good to be true?  Well, it is – but keep reading anyway because it is almost that easy.  There is an online resource called Carry Academy that, although it doesn’t get you your actual permit, could save you a lot of time and money on your path to concealed carry by taking care of training requirements online in about 45 minutes.  Then all that’s left is for you to apply for your permit.

Expedite Your Permit Process

A common course of action for many, if not most, applicants goes something like this…  You decide you want to carry a concealed weapon so you start hunting around for information about how to get a license and (usually) find that the process involves some sort of training.  So then you look for instructors in your area who teach the required class and hope that you can find one that fits into your schedule.  If you get lucky and find one that fits, you wait for training day to roll around, pay the course fee, spend the whole day in class and wait for your certificate of completion to show up so that you can submit it with your permit application and start the real wait.

The Carry Academy fast forwards the process for many by providing an on-demand firearms safety course online any time you want and costing only $50.  The online course condenses much of the material that you would otherwise get in the classroom into  Continue reading

(Almost) Zero Bulk Concealed Carry

TechnaClip SigTucking your CCW pistol into your waistband is a fast, easy way to conceal your firearm without adding the bulk (or expense) of a holster. However, this style of so-called “Mexican carry” is not without its issues.

The first concern is safety, as it generally leaves the trigger exposed and could spell trouble if your finger or some other object inadvertently gets inside of the trigger guard and onto the bang switch.  If you choose to tuck your pistol into your belt, to pocket carry or to use some other method that does not shield the trigger, be aware of this and exercise appropriate caution to prevent a dangerous situation.

The next issue with having a gun just stuffed into the waist of your pants is that it relies on the pressure between your belt or pants and your body to hold the pistol in place.  This is all well and good if you’re not being particularly active, but throw some motion into the mix and your carry piece could shift around into an awkward position or even slip down your pant leg (Plaxico Burress, anyone?).

For some time KelTec owners have enjoyed a beautifully simple improvement over simply cramming a loaded firearm into their pants:  a small clip that mounts to the frame of the gun to hold it in place.  Unfortunately this hasn’t been an option for owners of many other firearms.  Until recently.
