Governor Opposes Judge on Self Defense Handgun Issue

S&W Takes on Taurus in the Big, Multi-Caliber Revolver Category

Love it or hate it, The Taurus Judge has been around for a while now.  In case you’ve been under a rock (or if you just ignored those strange looking things in the corner of your gun shop’s case), the Judge, pictured at right, is a Taurus revolver capable of firing both .410 shotgun shells and .45 Colt rounds.  Taurus also offers other flavors of Judge revolvers which can add .454 Casull rounds into the mix.  The revolver, formerly model 4410, gained the Judge moniker in 2006 after Taurus Executive VP Bob Morrison learned that the firearm was becoming popular for courtroom self-defense with judges in high-crime areas.

The Judge line of revolvers is marketed as a short-distance self defense firearm and is also enjoying some popularity as a “snake gun” or “rat gun.”  Despite numerous critics of the platform, the Judge line seems to be selling briskly and is reported to have become Taurus’ top selling firearm.  Perhaps to the chagrin of those critics, Smith & Wesson has entered the market with their answer to the Judge:  the cleverly named Governor, which also fires .45 Colt and 2.5″ .410 cartridges but also introduces the ability to fire .45ACP rounds.

To be sure, the idea of a big, heavy revolver that can shoot a variety of big, heavy ammunition isn’t Continue reading

Texas Event Draws Attention to Suppressor Legality

First Annual Silencers are Legal Shoot to be held at Elm Fork Shooting Range in Dallas, TX, April 28th 2012

SilencerCo OspreyJoshua Waldron, CEO of SilencerCo, recently announced that the company would play host to The Silencers are Legal Shoot this spring.  The event, which will take place April 28, 2012 at the Elm Fork Shooting Range in Dallas, TX, is part of a larger Silencers are Legal campaign.  The campaign, begun in 2011, seeks to raise awareness about what SilencerCo calls “a booming, yet marginalized US industry that is battling for its constitutional rights.”

In the United States, suppressors (often referred to as “silencers”) are regulated largely by the 1934 National Firearms Act.  Although they are generally legal for individual ownership (following the required application and taxation process), some states such as California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont do not allow Continue reading

GunLink’s Best of SHOT Show 2012

Well, the 2012 NSSF Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show has come and gone from Fabulous Las Vegas and the 1,600 exhibiting companies brought with them many great innovations in the firearms, law enforcement, personal and home protection and outdoor realms.  It also brought out many faces familiar to firearms and outdoor enthusiasts.  The NSSF reports record setting buyer attendance (36,383 to be exact – which lead to record-setting numbers of sales orders being written at the show) and what they describe as “what may be the highest level of enthusiasm our industry has shown to start a new year.”  The record-setting attendance of 61,000 may have been a part of what prompted the 3-year contract extension which guarantees that the show will remain in Las Vegas at least through 2015.

With a show as huge as SHOT, it can take a little time to digest everything that one sees and does during the show.  The 2012 SHOT Show festivities lasted from January 16th through 20th 2012 and included shooting range time, company exhibits, movie screenings, celebrity appearances, meetings and more.  By now, we’ve had just about enough time to come up with a brief list of some of our favorite things from this year’s show.  Continue reading

Spring 2012 Machine Gun Shoot at Knob Creek is CANCELED

Spent Brass at the Knob Creek Machine Gun ShootThere is a biannual celebration of all things firearms related nestled in the hills of north-central Kentucky. Knob Creek Gun Range normally holds their Machine Gun Shoot and Military Gun Show in April and October, when people from all over the nation and from around the world make their trek to this Machine Gun Mecca.  Shooting benches on the firing line are so popular and in such high demand that they must be reserved years in advance.

Unfortunately, both shooters and spectators alike this spring will be without the opportunity to attend what is billed as “The World’s Largest Machine Gun Shoot and Military Gun Show.”  The Knob Creek Gun Range website has one of their famously good-natured banners splashed across the front page that reads “Too many floods, not enough bridge.”  The website goes on with the crushing news:  “NOTICE: KCR regrets to inform our fans and customers that due to major weather damage and unavoidable bridge reconstruction the 2012 Spring Machine Gun Shoot & Military Gun Show has been cancelled.” Continue reading

Rules for a Gunfight – Rule Number 1: Bring a Gun

GunslingerObviously, one should strive to avoid being in a gunfight.  Gunfights are, for the most part, not desirable situations in which to be.  They are typically loud, dangerous, stressful situations and may result in injury or death to one or more of the involved combatants.  Because of these and other factors, one should seek to find a more peaceable resolution for conflicts than a gun battle.

That being said, gunfights sometimes happen whether you want them to or not.  There are lists of “Gunfight Rules” floating around the internet on various web pages, in forwarded emails, hanging on gun store walls and other similar places.  While the source of these rules varies depending upon who you ask, a vague consensus seems to indicate that the first (and, arguably, most important) rule of gunfighting comes from a conversation between Col. Jeff Cooper and Mark Moritz regarding whether or not there are any rules in a gunfight to begin with.

More rules have been added to supplement this first rule, with some sources giving credit to a Drill Sergeant from Fort Benning by the name of Joe Frick.  Presented here for your edification and enjoyment are

28 Rules for Gunfighting:

1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your Continue reading
