ATF Publishes Updated Firearms and Commerce Report
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) today released the Firearms Commerce in the United States 2013 report, which contains information about domestic firearms manufacturing, as well as the importation and exportation of firearms. The report contains the most up-to-date information available about the firearms industry and ATF’s regulatory activities including firearms entering commerce and statistical data.
“The information in this report provides insight for the general public on the number of firearms reported as manufactured and imported in the United States annually,” said ATF Assistant Director, Office of Enforcement Programs and Services, Arthur Herbert. “The report also provides statistical information about ATF’s regulatory and enforcement initiatives.”
The 2013 update reports more than 6.5 million firearms were manufactured in 2011(the latest year available) and more than 4.8 million firearms were imported into the United States in 2012. In addition, more than 1 million National Firearms Act (NFA) transfers were processed by ATF in 2012, and there are currently more than 3.5 million NFA firearms registered. The number of federal firearms licensees (FFLs) increased from 123,587 in 2011 to 130,956 in 2012. This reflects a 6 percent increase in one year.
ATF continuously develops and strengthens its collaborative efforts with members of the firearms industry and consumers through education and outreach to prevent the diversion of firearms through illegal markets. This report provides one-stop shopping for those having an interest in firearms industry data.

Gun Violence Down. Again.
A new report released this month by the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) tells us what we already knew: gun control advocates are full of it. Unfortunately, much of the population is buying what the anti-gunners are selling. According to a recent Pew Research Center Survey, only 12% of Americans believe that gun crime is lower today than it was 20 years ago while nearly 60% believe it is higher.
Some of the highlights noted in the BJS report include:
- Firearm-related homicides declined 39%, from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011.
- Nonfatal firearm crimes declined 69%, from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 victimizations in 2011.
- About 70% to 80% of firearm homicides and 90% of nonfatal firearm victimizations were committed with a handgun from 1993 to 2011.
- From 1993 to 2010, males, blacks, and persons ages 18 to 24 had the highest rates of firearm homicide.
- In 2007-11, less than 1% of victims in all nonfatal violent crimes reported using a firearm to defend themselves during the incident.
- In 2004, among state prison inmates who possessed a gun at the time of offense, less than 2% bought their firearm at a flea market or gun show and 40% obtained their firearm from an illegal source.
These highlights seem a bit contradictory to the agendas that “mainstream” media and anti-rights zealots are foisting upon the ill-informed. Firearm-related murders are way down, yet “we need gun control now more than ever.” Victimizations involving firearms are way down, but “we need more control over who has firearms.” Most gun crimes involve handguns, but “we need to regulate ‘assault weapons.'” Nearly no firearms used in crimes come from private transfers at gun shows and flea markets, yet “we need to close the ‘gun show loophole.'”

NSSF Drops Reed Exhibitions as Managers of SHOT Show
You probably remember the blowup causing vendors to leave en mass from the Harrisburg, PA, Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show and the subsequent change in management to NRA managing the new Harrisburg show. You probably also remember the outcry over the continued management by Reed of the NSSF SHOT Show. The big news of the day is that NSSF has now terminated their agreement and the SHOT Show will be under new management going forward.
Announced via the SHOT Show Blog:
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms industry, today announced that it has reached an agreement with Reed Exhibitions to terminate the agreement the parties had for the management of the SHOT Show. Accordingly, effective immediately, Reed Exhibitions will no longer be manager and producer of the SHOT Show.
Reed Exhibitions provided excellent service to NSSF and the customers of the SHOT Show for more than three decades, however, the company’s decision to restrict the sale of certain types of firearms this year at its consumer hunting and fishing show — an event unrelated to NSSF and the SHOT Show — was in conflict with NSSF’s mission to serve the shooting sports industry. As a result, both organizations decided it was in the best interest of the SHOT Show to end their relationship.
NSSF is actively engaged in the process of identifying a new show management company to manage and produce the SHOT Show beginning with the 2014 SHOT Show.
The SHOT Show — the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show — is owned and sponsored by NSSF. It is the largest and most comprehensive trade show for all professionals involved with the shooting sports, hunting and law enforcement industries. The 2014 SHOT Show will be held Jan. 14-17 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas.
Discuss the change in the NSSF SHOT Show board on the GunLink Forums.

Fear not, fans of the outdoor sporting show – the National Rifle Association has stepped in to continue the Harisburg tradition with a new name and less knee-jerk anti-rights attitude:

SHOT Business magazine, the trade magazine for the shooting, hunting and firearms industry, has named U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as its 2012 SHOT Business Person of the Year.
