3GN Rumble on the Range 2014
As in past years, we took a break from our exhausting coverage of SHOT Show to head out to the 3-Gun Nation championship – known as the “Rumble on the Range” – at Clark County Shooting Complex. And, as in past years, we weren’t disappointed by the action we found there.
We arrived just in time to catch Lena Miculek-Afentul take the ladies’ side of the championship and, with it, the $25,000 prize. Amid the buzzing, camera laden UAVs circling the range, gun smoke and windblown desert sand, there was time to grab a bite to eat and a drink (provided by the event sponsors, including Cheaper Than Dirt) before crowding the range to watch the men’s championship. Optimizing the KelTec P-11
Perfecting the Compact Pistol for Carry, Defense and the Range

Kel-Tec pistols are wildly popular for concealed carry and personal/home defense. According to ATF reports, Kel-Tec has produced an average of around 110,000 pistols per year for the past five years year (130,000 in 2009 alone) placing them solidly among the top manufacturers. Their USA-made pistols are available in a variety of calibers, each coming with a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty. A Kel-Tec representative couldn’t give us exact numbers but said that many of their models are “pushing or over a million already.”
However, along with these large numbers there are also a number of common complaints about the pistols. Some of these gripes include Continue reading
BATFE Tests of 3D Printed Firearms
There has been buzz among the firearms community for some time now regarding 3D printing, rapid prototyping technology and how it can be used to produce firearms. Much of the fervor was stemmed by the Wiki-Weapon project.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) led a multi-agency working group testing the use of 3-D printing technology in the making of firearms. The test, focusing on the Liberator design, resulted in several videos which were posted to the ATFHQ YouTube Channel.
The Bureau tested the Liberator produced with ABS material with what appears to be successful results: Continue reading
“Where To Shoot” App Puts Shooting Opportunities in the Palm of Your Hand
WhereToShoot.Org bills itself as “North America’s most comprehensive directory of shooting ranges,” allowing site visitors to find shooting ranges near their location whether they’re at home or traveling. The free WhereToShoot app for smartphones and tablets (available for both Android and iOS) makes finding a place to shoot even more convenient.
The app is as simple to use as you might imagine. Tell it where you want to shoot and it gives you a list of shooting ranges within your specified distance. Click on a range and it gives you all of the pertinent details including the range address, telephone number, website address, range type, facility details and more. If you’re more of a visual person and you prefer to see your closest ranges shown on a map rather than in a list, there’s an option for that as well.
Not sure where you are? Not a problem. Enough smartphone and tablet apps these days make use of the device’s location services that it no longer seems like the magical feature that it once might have but it really works great in the Where To Shoot app. The app can figure out where you are and base the shooting range search results on that. The app also seamlessly integrates with the Continue reading
Shooters Can Help Prevent Fires During Hot Dry Months
Summer doesn’t officially start until June 21 this year but in our area we’ve already had plenty of summer-like weather. We’re still getting some of the spring rain but the temps are climbing and the sun is… well, hot. I’ve watched numerous fires burn hundreds or thousands acres after a round touched off a blaze. The picture at right shows one such fire at Fort Knox, which burned over 12,000 acres over the course of a week and required thousands of firefighter man-hours, all sparked by a tracer round.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has recently launched an awareness campaign to help remind the shooting community that they can do their part to prevent wildfires. NSSF offers several tips: Continue reading
