U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan Named SHOT Business Magazine’s Person of the Year

SHOT Business magazine, the trade magazine for the shooting, hunting and firearms industry, has named U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as its 2012 SHOT Business Person of the Year.

Mitt Romney’s selection of Ryan as his vice presidential running mate was widely supported by hunters and recreational shooters. A former co-chair of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus and an avid outdoorsman, Ryan has worked on behalf of sportsmen and wildlife throughout his tenure in Congress. His ongoing and future efforts will continue to play an important role in preserving America’s hunting, shooting and conservation heritage. Continue reading

Project Appleseed Mixes US History and Marksmanship

AppleseedProject Appleseed is a program offered by the Revolutionary War Veterans Association (RWVA) that focuses on American Revolutionary War education, basic firearms safety and rifle marksmanship skills.  The program started in 2006 in North Carolina, stemming from commentaries under the byline of “Fred” that ran alongside his surplus rifle-stock advertisements in Shotgun News.  From those humble beginnings, the program has grown to much larger proportions with thousands of attendees at hundreds of events across the nation every year.

The RWVA mission statement reads, in part:

Through Project Appleseed, the Revolutionary War Veterans Association is committed to teaching two things: rifle marksmanship and our early American heritage. We do this for one simple reason, the skill and knowledge of what our founding fathers left to us is eroding in modern America and without deliberate action, they will be lost to ignorance and apathy.

I first started hearing “buzz” about Project Appleseed around 2008 or so and Continue reading

Strip Gun Club Offers Unique Shooting Experience on Las Vegas Strip

Strip Gun Club Custom M3HBDuring SHOT Show 2013 we had a chance to take a break from the show floor and visit Las Vegas’ newest firearms-oriented addition.  Opening in early December 2012, the Strip Gun Club, which describes itself as the “first and only shooting range on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip,”  offers a high-end shooting experience for visiting shooters and locals alike.

The double doors at the front of the building (featuring rifle- and pistol-themed handles) give way to a well appointed lobby/gift shop complete with hardwood floors, attractive furnishings and a gun safe protected by the door of a bank safe allegedly knocked over by John Dillinger himself.  The place is decidedly a touch classier than many other shooting ranges I’ve been to.

The point of a shooting range, however, is not the decor – however nice it may be here.  Strip Gun Club offers seven shooting lanes divided among Continue reading

Tracking Point Xact System Offers Amazing Update to Long Range Shooting

Tracking Point Xact System at SHOT Show 2013The first documented use of firearms was somewhere in circa-12th-century China.  While it’s quite clear that firearms and their accessories have come a long way since the first gunpowder-filled tubes, the basic principles remain the same: ignite the propellant and the expanding gasses send the projectile out of the business end of the barrel.  For the most part, any advancements since then have been been to make firearms more effective in terms of power, portability and accuracy.  A big advancement in the accuracy department was on display from Tracking Point at the 2013 SHOT Show.

Tracking Point’s XactSystem is a Precision Guided Firearm (PGF), which the company describe as “fighter-jet-style, lock-and-launch technology into a rifle system.”  This closed-loop system consists of ultra-consistent ammo loaded by Barnes, a precision Surgeon Rifle with a 22-27″ Krieger barrel and Harris bipod on a LaRue QD mount, and the smart networked tracking scope mounted on top.  Given the components involved, the precision of the rifle itself is spectacular, but the scope is what makes the system truly amazing.

The XactSystem’s tracking scope takes the ballistic guesswork out of Continue reading

Keep Plugging Away; Maybe Ammo Prices Will Drop

Firearms Industry Praises Congressman Shuster for Work on Behalf of Hunters and Target Shooters

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry, today praised Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials, for bringing to the attention of Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood the bureaucratic obstruction within the department’s Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) that is increasing the price gun owners have to pay for smokeless powder.

PHMSA is continuing to impose unnecessary regulatory burdens on smokeless powder manufacturers and distributors that result in higher shipping costs that are passed on to consumers. The increased shipping cost is due to PHMSA’s mishandling of the regulations that govern the shipment of smokeless powder. Although DOT has determined that smokeless powder can be safely shipped under less burdensome regulations, PHMSA has effectively blocked this reclassification costing manufacturers money, jobs and exports while driving up prices for consumers.
